Your osteopath will use techniques that they find appropriate for your particular problem which may include the following;
Soft Tissue Work – Used for muscles, tendons and ligaments.
- Remedial Soft Tissue Massage – sore muscles are gently stretched and massaged to allow the restoration of normal tone and strength.
- Trigger Point Release – sometimes when problems have been longer standing, certain muscles develop small areas of contracted muscles fibres (commonly called knots) that can be released by a technique that uses the application of pressure.
- Deep Friction – used to stimulate areas of chronic injury to increase blood flow and restore function.
- Functional Techniques – very small but deliberate movements are applied to the soft tissues aiming to restore normal tone and tension.
Articulation / Mobilisation – Used on joints
- Movement of joints through pain free ranges encouraging normal movements patterns.
- Stretching of stiff joints to increase and restore normal ranges of movement
- Traction – gentle separation of joint surfaces that encourages more movement and also relaxes the soft tissues surrounding the joints.
Manipulation – used on joints mainly of the spine.
Low amplitude, high velocity Thrust (LAHVT) -here the joint surfaces are quickly separated often causing an audible “pop”. This technique increases movements in the joints and rebalances abnormal muscle tone surrounding the joints.
Cranial / Cranio-Sacral Therapy
This is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body, including the head.
It is a gentle yet extremely effective approach and may be used in a wide range of conditions for people of all ages, from birth to old age.
